Synopsis

Time: Chinese Han Dynasty
Place:
Dalang Port of Hupu County in Beihai, Guangxi.
A port in Pulau Pisang
Moonlight Rock, later known as “Amah Rock” because of the heart-breaking love story.

In 111B.C, as the land silk route from China to western countries was blocked in the chaos of war, Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty sent envoys to Hepu to find the sea route leading to the west. The dance drama of Romance on Marine Silk Route depicts the history of Ancient China’s Marine Silk Route, underlining the context of the love story between Da Pu and Ah Ban, while displaying the friendship with Shalaina (daughter of the King of Pulau Pisang) who was saved by Da Pu. The drama demonstrates China’s cultural heritage of exploring the marine silk route and reflects the customs of countries in Southeast Asia, reproducing the history of China’s amicable contacts as well as commodity trades with peoples in this area. This performance eulogizes human civilization and wisdom, friendship and peace across countries, highlighted by Da Pu’s loyalty to his beloved one and his homeland.
